Thermal transfer printing is a process which uses heat and pressure to melt and transfer a pigmented resin coating onto the surface of a vinyl or polyester material. The printer or stamper uses a digital thermal print head or a heated magnesium etched die to press into the polyester film ribbon (sometimes called "foil"), which is coated on the label side with a wax, wax-resin, or pure resin pigment. The pigment melts, and is pressed (transferred) into the vinyl or polyester atop a driven rubber roller or rubber platen.
